A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between National Lake Conservation Development Committee (NLCDC) and Kathmandu University (KU)

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between National Lake Conservation Development Committee (NLCDC) and Kathmandu University (KU) on 6th April 2023 at NLCDC office, New Baneshwor to establish a working mechanism where both institutions come together by sharing research knowledge and resources in achieving common goals and objectives for the conservation and sustainable management of lakes and wetlands of Nepal for the nature conservation and prosperity.

Through this MOU, NLCDC and KU seeks to collaborate in designing mutually agreed programs and projects that focus on the conservation of social, economic, cultural and biodiversity values of lakes, ponds and wetlands. The collaboration also aims to strengthen the research based on morphometric assessment of the lakes and wetlands of Nepal.

During the signing occasion, Ms. Sita Shahi, Executive Director of NLCDC stated “NLCDC is intensively working on sustainable conservation and wise use of lakes and wetlands to achieve our goal -“Lakes conservation for nature and prosperity” – which would be possible with the joint efforts of the research and academic institute like KU. I believe this collaboration will also significantly contribute to conservation governance and institutional capacity development.” Chairman of NLCDC, Mr. Dhruba Upreti highly appreciated the event and emphasized on the implementation of the MoU.

Prof. Dr. Janardan Lamichhane further added “Lakes and Wetlands are very important for the livelihood of people and biodiversity, however, due to the various anthropogenic activities the lakes and wetlands are disappearing and urgent conservation is essential. Prof. Dr. Subodh Sharma also added that the MoU will further strengthen the research collaboration with government of Nepal for the conservation and wise use of lakes and wetlands of Nepal”
Immediately after this collaboration, both institutions will be working towards the lakes and wetlands conservation of Nepal.
